Alex Waterhouse-Hayward is a one of Canada's pre-eminent magazine and portrait photographers as well as a walking talking history of interesting facts about plants, politicians, actors, musicians, artists, dancers, writers, Vancouver, Argentina, Mexico, and his granddaughters to name just a few things. In a career that spans more than a quarter-century his work has appeared in the New York TImes, Vanity Fair, Stern, Reader's Digest and what seems like every magazine of record in Canada. He has photographed everyone from Leonard Cohen to Iggy Pop, Annie Leibovitz to Arthur Erickson, with a touch of Douglas Coupland, Daniel Igali and Jack Layton thrown in for good measure. When he came to Skunkworks to create a new website for him, we knew instantly that we needed to create a vehicle for visitors to experience both the power of his photography and the fascinating mind at work behind the lens.
Skunkworks designed a clean, dramatic site that puts the emphasis squarely where it belongs — on the pictures themselves. We incorporated an easy to use content management system that enables Alex to change the look of his homepage at will. And, uniquely for a photographer's website, we incorporated a blog into the site design that has instantly become essential reading for a large and growing contingent of Waterhouse-Hayward fans around the world. Titled "A Thousand Words", Alex's blog provides both a unique insight into the craft of photography and a guided tour through the people, places and images that drive his creative vision.
