Skunkworks is honoured to have been selected by the BC Legal Historical Society to create a new logo, website and conference collateral in conjunction with the British Columbia Court of Appeal’s 100th anniversary. The logo reflects the number of judges (5) that hear cases of particular importance or where the court is being asked to review one of its previous decisions. For the centenary, the concept of review is extended to embrace a review of the past 100 years and all that has been accomplished since the court came into existence.
The BCCA100.ca website provides information on events planned during 2010 to celebrate the centenary including special sittings of the court and leading up to the national appellate judiciary symposium being held in Vancouver on April 22 and followed by a two-day conference for members of the legal profession at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue on April 23 and 24. The academic program features presentations from a cross-section of highly regarded legal professionals drawn from academia, practice and the bench. Topics range from the history (and future) of the court through current challenges faced by courts around the world, the impact of the media and scientific advances on the courts and the judiciary as well as the state of international criminal law and human rights. The full academic program and conference registration information are available as PDFs downloadable off the website.
The celebrations include a reception at the Vancouver Art Gallery and a gala dinner on April 23 where the Chief Justice of Canada, the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin P.C. will give the keynote address. The website provides full information on these events and how to participate.
In addition, the website includes a photo gallery drawn from the Court's archives including portraits of every Chief Justice of British Columbia, the original ground-breaking of the old courthouse building (now the Vancouver Art Gallery), and significant historical events such as Lord Denning's visit for the opening of the current Vancouver Courts in 1979, and the first all-woman panel of the Court of Appeal.
The site also references a one-hour documentary "Though the Heavens Fall: 100 Years of the BC Court of Appeal" that can be ordered through The Knowledge Network and notes the forthcoming book by author Christopher Moore, The British Columbia Court of Appeal: The First Hundred Years.
